Johnson
Alex Johnson,
born in 1997 in
Norwalk/Connecticut, USA, started learning to play the
carillon at the age of 18 at the University of Rochester,
where he took lessons from the university carillonneur
Doris Aman. He received additional instruction from Tim
Sleep, the carillonneur of Naperville, Illinois. In 2018
he passed the entrance examination of the Guild of
Carillonneurs in North America. In 2019 he received a
grant to study the carillon with Geert D’hollander in Lake
Wales, Florida. In the summer of that year he won first
prize at the internation Queen Fabiola carillon
competition in Mechelen, Belgium as well as the first
prize of its improvisation competition and the prize for
the best performance of a Belgian carillon piece. In the
autumn of 2019 the Belgian American Education Foundation
gave him a grant to study carillon at the Royal Carillon
School “Jef Denyn” in Mechelen and he was awarded his
diploma magna cum laude in 2020. He has given concerts in
Australia, the USA and Europe.
